What’s that stuff? Fluoride
Some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water because some people argue that it has led to better dental health, others view it as ‘mass medication’ with a substance that could actually be detrimental to health. Some people also cost a lot of money and it might not even improve dental health. Scientists have done studies in Ireland and they replaced all of their water pipelines to have fluorine in them and studies say that the dental health hasn’t improved since they installed the pipes. So I think that the major concern here is that they will spend all of this money doing this and it doesn’t even work. Some people claim that fluoride can lead to cancer and bone damage such as calcification and abnormal growth. Others claim it can lead to genetic mutations and chromosome aberrations. In July of 1997 the National Federal of Federal Employees (NFFE) co-sponsored the California Safe Drinking Water Initiative with other environmental professionals. The NFFE stated: “Our review of evidence from the last 11 years including human studies indicates a causal link between fluoride and cancer, genetic damage and neurological impairment. Of particular concern are studies linking fluoride exposure to lowered IQ in children.
I believe that adding fluoride to drinking water would be a waist of money and that they have done studies and it hasn’t even worked. That would cost a great sum of money and we could using that money for something better then on replacing the water lines to make our dental health better when we can just go to a dentist. So I believe that it is a bad idea because it can lead to cancer and bone damage which would increase the numbers of cancer in the U.S. The bone damage would also lead to more surgery to for how weak the bones are so they would break more easily and there would have to be more surgery to fix them.
Technological advances in toothpaste had to be made before fluoride could be widely used in toothpaste and mouthwashes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are responsible for approving over-the counter fluoride products marketed in the United States and or setting standards for such items as toothpaste and mouthwash. In 1996, toothpaste labeling regulations were mandated by the FDA. It directs parents of children aged < 2 years of age to seek the advice of a dentist before introducing their child to fluoride. It was found that children less than 2 were susceptible to enamel fluorosis which it the development of enamel opacity if ingested early in tooth development. The current standard for fluoride in toothpaste is 1,000-1,1000 ppm.
I believe that the side affects that concern me the most is cancer . Cancer is a very scary and life threatening disease and your life will change forever once you are diagnosed with cancer. Another side affects that concerns me is the bone damage. If you have bone damage from too weak of bones then they will break more easily and you can’t do the things you would like to do that require a lot of bone strength. These are the side effects that concern me the most.
